GIBS Postgraduate Business School
Illovo, Johannesburg, South Africa
Completed 2000

Green Inc helped to develop the winning entry for a competition to select the architects and landscape architects for a new business school to be developed in Illovo, Johannesburg. The school was to be developed by the University of Pretoria making use of a private grant, and has been named the Gordon Institute of Business Science, in honour of its benefactor. The winning concept's unique attribute is a large landscaped courtyard at the core of the facility, linking the business school, the cafeteria, a small hotel and the parking area. This courtyard, with its lawn quadrants and flat-topped Acacias, is an African reinterpretation of the classic courtyard theme most notably used at Oxford University. It features twin reflecting pools fed by sculptural pots in a blue glaze that picks up on glazed ceramics used in the building's detailing. A sunken "kund", or meeting place, is used as an outdoor classroom at the other end of the courtyard, in the shade of the Acacias. The hotel, developed to house visiting academics and lecturers, has its own private landscape and vegetable garden.
