Anton Comrie

BL (Pret) PrLArch
Principal Landscape Architect
Founding Director

Anton’s philosophy revolves around the creation of projects with a sense of integrity, contextual responsibility and ecological integration. More recently he has focused on planning projects (in collaboration with urban designers and architects) with the aim of integrating ecological and environmental systems thinking into the design process.

Over the past 20 years he has worked on projects varying in scale and complexity: from large scale planning projects like the Mon Trésor Smart City in Mauritius, to small scale design projects like the African Cabinet Garden, located at the IGA, Berlin, Germany. He has worked in numerous countries in Africa and the Middle Eastern region and with architects as far afield as London (Foster and Partners) and New York (SHoP).

He has worked on urban renewal projects like the Hollard Street Upgrade and the Braamfontein Regeneration Project in the Johannesburg CBD. His award-winning heritage and memorial work include The Freedom Park (Tswane,Gauteng), Liliesleaf Farm (Rivonia, Jhb) and the Sharpeville Memorial (Gauteng).  He has also participated in winning design competition submissions that include the Anglo-American Campus, the Premiers Offices in Bhisho, the UJ Arts Centre (Johannesburg), PFG Glass centre (Midrand) and Gateway Circle (Durban). His work has been recognized through international awards like the Architecture+ Award in Dubai, the Torsanlorenzo Prize (Italy) and eleven Awards of Excellence from the Institute for Landscape Architecture in South Africa (ILASA).

Stuart has spent his career making places for people, be they university students, hospital patients, members of the public or homeowners. Some key projects include the Northern Cape Legislature, campus upgrades at the University of Johannesburg, the Gordon Institute of Business Science campus, a lecture hall complex for the University of Pretoria, hospitals in Vryburg, Ndantsane and Kimberley, public parks in Soweto and Lenasia and the home of Kaizer Chiefs FC.

Stuart has worked to raise the profile of the profession of landscape architecture through his involvement with the Institute for Landscape Architecture in South Africa (ILASA), of which body he is past president. During his tenure as president he championed ILASA’s bid to host the 2012 International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) World Congress and undertook a roadshow to most of the regional offices of the Department of Public Works to tell employees about the profession of landscape architecture.

He focuses on the use of simple materials, often in their rawest form, and crafts each individual project according to the unique character of the site and the end user. He remains involved at the University of Pretoria where has given workshops and acted as external examiner for many of the programs, including the ML(Prof) year.
